Diversyn

DIVERSYN

A dual-function syringe capable of dramatically reducing contamination during the collection of blood cultures.

Current methods of obtaining blood cultures have a high margin of error, along with improper sterilization of the skin and improper filling of the bottles.

The volume of the blood obtained for each blood culture set is the most significant variable in recovering microorganism from patients with bloodstream infections.

See how it works

Recent research has shown that diverting the initial 1-2 ml of blood into a sterile container can decrease blood culture contamination up to 88%, which can yield an overall decrease in FPBCs to <1% resulting in annual savings of $10-15 billion and a decrease in 4 million patient hospital days.

Current recommendations include collecting at least two 20 ml sets of blood distributed equally between an aerobic and an anaerobic bottle from two distinct sites.

Here’s how it works

diversyn-syringes-fpoArtboard-1

DIVERSYN sterilely isolates the initial 1-3 mls of blood from the rest of the sample within one syringe, assuring a sterile sample of 20 mls of blood obtained for accurate collection of blood cultures during a venipuncture.

Activate

The red button is activated; diverts and sequesters initial 1.5-3 ml of blood that carries potential contaminant

Draw

Clinician draws remaining 20 ml of blood necessary for proper filling of standard blood culture bottles

Test

DIVERSYN is then sent to clinical lab for processing of blood cultures under a sterile hood by a trained laboratory professional
